“We promise you’ve never seen anything quite as weird and wonderful as us!”
You all know me by now – if there’s an illustrated animal book nearby, I am a lioness charging to get a copy. And let me tell you — this was a flipping cool nature book!
This book teaches about life underwater – starting at the very top (epipelagic zone) alllll the way to the bottom (hadalpelagic zone).
“It was once thought that no life could survive in this place.”
Throughout this book we get amazing animal facts, fascinating “deep dives” into how life survives, and fun anecdotes from the animals.
I loved seeing all of the weird, wacky, and crazy animals that live throughout the ocean’s layers! The vampire squid, hagfish, and anglerfish were all familiar to me but I was able to learn new facts.
The lion’s mane jellyfish, colossal squid and pigbutt worm (yes, that is a real name) were new and absolutely wild.
The illustration style was bold, colorful, and quirky – often the animals “helped” by saying funny things or commenting on their own facts. Even the “scarier” animals in the ocean ended up looking pretty dang cute thanks to the art style!
Overall, if you are looking for an awesome book all about ocean animals, I highly recommend this one!!
