★★★★ ½
…they couldn’t find anything, not a river or a pond on the island. It was hot, and they were thirsty.
The crew is not having a good day – they are parched, they’re out of juice boxes and worst of all – there’s a new crew member.
Matie the goat is much loved by first mate Hallie and the youngest member, Cayla…but the other members of the crew? Not so much.
The other crew members are angry that Matie took the last juice box and have started to tease the poor goat.
A big tear rolled down Matie’s cheek.
When Captain No Beard hears of this, he tries to help…but it doesn’t work as planned.
“Can’t we all get along!” he called out to them.
…he did not get a response…
Will the crew be able to survive this? Or will they be split forever?
I’m really adoring this Captain No Beard series.
Each book delves into another issue that kids face – -like how to handle situations when someone new joins who you aren’t sure about – and shows different ways of dealing with it.
Cayla accepts the newest member right away, but some of the other crew aren’t quite so welcoming.
I like how Roman shows how bullying affects Matie – making fun of the little goat’s name really hurt the fella – and I appreciated how the other crew members did not tolerate it.
It’s a great way to show that if you stand up to bullies, that there are real, positive outcomes that come with it.
As always, the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous – Bonnie Lemaire has got this signature style that really breaths life into these books.
Such a great series!
