“There was a feeling of electricity running through the entire attic, and everything seemed to slow down and speed up all at once.”
Siblings Jack, Eva, and GG used to be excited about moving into a new house but a quick trip up a secret passage quickly unleashes something far more sinister than any of the children could have expected.
“…GG was interrupted by ever single light in the house shutting off at the same instant. There was no spark, no popping… Just…darkness.”
At first it was little, unexplained things happening. Stuff that can easily be dismissed by their parents…but night after night, the children realize that whatever was let out…is not going back on its own.
“…both girls jumped as they heard a wet, snarling noise accompanied by a most hideous scraping metal sound repeating and repeating in rapid bursts.”
The children will need to face their fears and put a stop to the haunting…or else!
This one contains a few of the same characters and I quite liked getting to know them better. Max (the family dog) was an absolute scene stealer – he was so smol and yet so brave!
And I really enjoyed the dynamic between the siblings. I could absolutely tell that they all cared for and wanted to protect each other.
I thought the hauntings of this story had a good level of ‘spook’ – aka enough to make a kid wonder BUT not enough to keep them from sleeping.
And the illustrations were a really enjoyable addition to this book.
The one thing that did pull me a bit from the story was the perspective. It felt like we were switching perspective a lot and occasionally breaking the fourth wall. There were also a lot of descriptions that felt unnecessary and bogged down the writing at times.
It made the story feel a bit choppy for me though by the end of the book, I did notice we had ‘settled’ more into the story and that is what brought the book back up to four stars.
Ultimately, I feel like this author has a lot of potential and I’m really excited to see what he publishes next!
