“We walk single file along the worn trail, passing oaks, Indian paintbrush, wallflower and gooseberry … ‘It’s a perfect day to fish.’ “
In this story, the papa and his child are getting ready for a fishing adventure – going to their familiar little spot in the river…but fishing isn’t just about catching fish.
The pair enjoy a crisp autumnal hike – seeing the beautifully golden foliage – and they take time to observe the little things.
“We turn over rocks at the river’s edge and inspect the insects that squiggle-wiggle underneath.”
The two bond over fly fishing – casting and mending again and again with just a flick of the wrist. Hopefully, something will bite!
This was such a sweet story! Right off the bat, I really liked the art style to this story.
There were gorgeous watercolor-esque illustrations filling every page with their gentle colors and beautiful blending.
The scenery, in particular, really caught my eye – I felt like I was right there with the two of them – following the riverbend and keeping an eye out for trout!
The story was meandering – much like the flow of the river – we took tangents and pauses to admire the trout or the water – but we got there in the end. I like picture books like this, I feel like the slow pacing worked really well for it.
The characters reminded me of my childhood. I never went fly-fishing but I did go fishing quite often in the summers with my dad…the only difference being that my dad probably spent 70% of the trip either pulling the line out of the tree, rebaiting my hook, or untangling my line from his!
