This…oh gosh, where do I even start? I think this the most emotionally powerful picture book I’ve ever read. I loved it so much but it’s going to take a few read-throughs until I can read this one out to my little one in a steady voice.
In this story, we follow a mother and her daughter throughout the years – from baby to toddler to little girl to teenager to adult to becoming a mother.
Throughout this cycle we see little vignettes into the daughter’s life – all the ways she’s needed her mother throughout the years. Both the good times and the bad.
If your friendships grow apart, or your first love breaks your heart, “Mom, I’m so sad.” Call your mother.
Each moment was so touching, and so reminiscent of my own life. I was that girl scared to play alone, to take the big test, who got lonely at college and just wanted to talk to my mother.
And now that I’m a mother? Let’s just say that the last few pages where the daughter is experiencing motherhood for the first time hit particularly hard.
Normally when I say I cried while reading a book, I really mean that I got choked up or maybe shed a tear or two. This one was actual crying.
I think it’s cause I’m just coming out of the newborn trenches and this book really made me reflect on all the ways my own mother was such a pillar to my life and how I don’t know if I could’ve survived as well as I did without her.
Truly one of (if not the best) children’s books I’ve ever read.
