The Great and the Grand ~ Benjamin Fox

description

“It is an uncommonly good day. Sunrise brings The New from slumber. Meanwhile, The Old prepares for visitors.”

This beautifully illustrated book showcases a grandchild meeting their grandfather.

We get glimpses into their lives – how each one interprets their world, and the importance of their perspectives.

“The New sees The Old for the first time and smiles.
The Old holds The New for the first time and cries.”

Whew. This one was wonderful.

What really stood out to myself is just how much I could I could see myself in this story. As I read on, so many moments connected me and my own little baby to the actions of the characters.

I don’t think I truly have words for how it felt to see my own dad hold his grandchild for the first time, but this book comes pretty darn close.

What really stuck out to me for this book is just how much emotion the author is able to showcase with just a few words and an illustration.

Seriously, I started to lose it with “The Old is learning to let go” and the tears were flowing the moment The Old and The New were met.

I really think that’s a sign of an incredible picture book – to elicit such a reaction in a reader with only a handful of sentences. It was beautiful.

And the illustrations – I cannot resist talking up these pictures. They were incredibly well-done, far beyond what I’d expect for a typical picture book. Icing on the cake! Cherry on the sundae. Sprinkles on the cookie!

This is going to be a treasured story for our family.
