The Dirt ~ Lindsey Leigh

description

“Dirt alone is lifeless, but soil is healthy and teeming with life.”

This beautifully illustrated nature book teaches us all about what’s going on underneath our feet. (Spoiler: it’s a lot!).

Now, I’ve read the author’s other two books in this genre The Deep! and The Dark! and really enjoyed learning about ocean-dwelling and cave-dwelling animals (respectively).

And let me tell you, this book is just as excellent as the previous two!

Right off the bat, the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. They breathe life into all of the cool information and interesting facts. And yes, the facts really ARE that interesting!

Every page held something new and I loved that.

We learn all about what goes into the soil to make it so alive and about the different organisms that live in it – from micro fauna (smaller than 0.004 inches) allllll the way up to megafauna (larger than an inch)!

Which, on a side note, can we talk about how wild that a simple “mole” is considered megafauna in the grand scheme of soil? How cool is that? (SUPER cool).

Overall, I think this is a fabulous book for the little scientist in your life (or heck, why not read it yourself? It’s a fun book!)

Who knew plain old dirt was so alive?!
